FULBRIGHT COMMISSION (AUSTRIAN-AMERICAN COMMISSION)

The Fulbright Act, introduced in 1946 by US Senator J. William Fulbright, empowered the Secretary of State to allocate the proceeds from the sale of excess military supplies outside of America to the financing of exchange programs for students and professors. More than 3,000 Austrians and nearly 2,000 Americans have since enjoyed the benefits of the Austrian-American Educational Commission, which is responsible for awarding the funds. All of these programs are financed with Fulbright funds as well as with funds from the Austrian Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts.

The Fulbright Commission also administrates other support systems, such as grants from the Ministry for Science and Transport for postgraduate studies in the US, the teachers assistant program for Americans at Austrian schools and the annual one-week America Studies Seminar for Austrian students.
