About the Artist
Johann Feilacher

Johann Feilacher was born in Villach, Austria, in 1954. He studied medicine in Graz and worked as an artist on the side. From 1983 to 1986 he was Dr. Leo Navratil's assistant and since 1986 has been the director of the House of Artists in Gugging. Feilacher organizes international exhibitions in Europe and the USA, publishes books, art catalogues, and articles in art magazines with an emphasis on art brut.

As a sculptor, Feilacher has been active in Lower Austria and occasionally in New York. He has shown his works galleries and sculpture parks in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, England, and the USA.

Johann Feilacher is a self-taught sculptor. He primarily uses wood; his tool of choice is a chain saw. Most of his works are large. He creates a symbiosis between his clear, simple forms and the surrounding landscape. With countless cuts he obliterates the solidity of his objects, allowing the surrounding space to penetrate the work itself.
