THE AUSTRIAN MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Austria joined the European Union on January 1, 1995. And, because of recent political developments, Austria now borders eight countries: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. More than ever, Austria is a gateway between Eastern and Western Europe. Foreign policy necessarily plays a central role in Austria's governmental structure.

Within the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, seven departments oversee Austria's political, economic, legal and cultural activities abroad. The Austrian Cultural Institute is a branch office of the Ministry and its Department for Cultural, Scientific and Educational Affairs and its seven subdivisions.

The annual Austrian Cultural Foreign Policy Report, published by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, includes a comprehensive review of Austrian cultural activities worldwide.
